Crime increase in the Pinetown CBD

Manqele said in the past few weeks three cases were opened at Pinetown SAPS related to crime near Home Affairs.

PINETOWN Police held another crime awareness campaign in the Pinetown CBD. The campaign was aimed at addressing street robberies that occur at certain intersections around the CBD.

Motorists were warned not to leave windows open when approaching intersections. Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele, said in the past weeks a number of people were the victims of robberies while waiting in the line outside Pinetown Home Affairs office.

Recently, a woman was pushed face-down onto the ground by two well-dressed men who tried to rob her and her family of their belongings.

In another incident, a 80-year-old woman and her daughter were mugged by two men also outside Home Affairs.

The daughter was assisting her mother with her pension application at SASSA when they received a form that needed to be handed in at Pinetown Home Affairs. The daughter was on holiday from England to celebrate her mother’s 80th birthday on 11 February.

Her mother asked her to help her apply for her pension. The daughter parked in the area below Home Affairs and they were making their way towards the entrance when two men came up to them.

She initially thought the two men were going to ask her something, and when she asked them how she could help, in unison the two men reached for the necklaces across both the women’s necks and pulled.
