Publicly name and shame him

Reader questions the justice system of this country.

EDITOR – How disappointing it was to read that a 39-year-old Kloof man received a sentence of ‘R30 000 and five years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years’ on a charge of possessing child pornography.

Reading the last paragraph, it doesn’t make sense to say, ‘This sentence is proof that criminals cannot get away after committing such deeds’ as stated by the provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lt Gen M Ngobeni.

It would seem that the accused has got away with a slap on the wrist, not even doing unpaid community work. Or is the shame of his name being known by a few sufficient punishment? Why is the name of the alleged offender not made public so he can really be shamed?
