Man dies in Westville wall collapse

In a freak accident last Friday evening, one man died and three others were injured.

A 55-year-old man was killed on Friday evening when a wall collapsed on top of him in Beverley Street in Westville.

“It is understood that due to heavy rains in the area, the family’s home flooded and they also lost electricity. According to bystanders on the scene, the man as well as another adult and two teenagers went outside to the wall prior to it collapsing. At this stage it is not clear if they suspected damage to the wall and thus went to investigate,” said Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesman.

The wall collapsed on the man and pinned him under the rubble and water for some time. “When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that he showed no signs of life and they initiated CPR,” said Vermaak. He was declared dead on the scene.

Vermaak noted that the other adult and two teenagers freed themselves from the rubble and were also seen to by paramedics.

The incident was handed over to the local police.
