Cyclists race for glory at the national championship in Westville

Get all the results from the 2016 SA National Road, Time Trial and Para-cycling Championships in Westville.

CYCLISTS, An-Li Kachelhoffer (Lotto-Soudol Ladies) and Jaco Venter (Dimension Data for Qhubeka), both won their first national championship titles in the 2016 South African National Road, Time-trial and Para-cycling Championships in Westville on the weekend.

Kachelhoffer (29) won the 119-kilometre Elite Women’s Road Race in a decisive manner when she perfectly executed what would be the final move of the day to break free from the pack and claim the victory, while Venter (29) delivered a 10-kilometre solo charge to claim the victory in the 170km Elite Men’s Road Race.

Although the Elite Men and Elite Women’s races stole the show, the national championships offered cyclists of all ages the chance to challenge their peers for the honour of being called the national champion.

Men and women from the ages of 30 to 80 and over, as well as tandem cyclists, took to the streets of Westville on the weekend, while the U16 and junior categories also raced for pride and glory. Not part of the South African Championship (but awarded special trophies and jerseys), riders from as young as eight competed in the U10, U12 and U14 categories.

Cycling South Africa and the race organisers thanked outer west metro for their brilliant efforts in managing the road closures, ensuring the safety of all competitors in Westville.

They also thanked the Westville and surrounding areas’ residents for being so accommodating and supportive.
