No plastic allowed at Hillcrest recycling centre

Only glass bottles, paper, cardboard, cans, polystyrene (from large appliances) will be recycled at the centre in Hillcrest.

HILLCREST residents are urged to take note that plastic will not be accepted at the Recycle Centre anymore as there is no collection of plastic by the service providers.

According to Lynn Templeman of the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA), plastic litter is becoming an worldwide problem.

“The site is managed by the volunteer committee members of KHBA, which receives no funding from any government organisation, 90 percent of all income derived from the site is paid to the staff. We, therefore appeal to the public to treat the site with respect, and only bring glass bottles, paper, cardboard, cans, polystyrene (from large appliances),” said Templeman.

She made a special appeal for residents not to take broken glass or crockery or plate glass windows as it is dangerous for staff to handle. She encouraged residents to rather place it in newspaper and into the black bag for collection on the usual refuse day.

On a separate note, Templeman, also said the surveillance cameras at the recyling centre are working beautifully. She said they captured an illegal dumper driving a silver Toyota double-cab dumping plastic banners from a well known supermarket chain in December 2015. Unfortunately when KHBA reported the incident to the police they discovered the vehicle had false number plates. Last month, a driver of a grey Honda sedan with an NPN registration was photographed dumping bags of plastic at the site.

“KHBA is in possession of the name and address of the owner. It needs to be pointed out that unwanted items at the recycling site causes us huge problems, in terms of time and money,” said Templeman.

On behalf of KHBA, she thanked all the responsible recyclers who are doing their bit to prevent recyclables going to the landfill site.
