Comment period extended for proposed Shongweni landfill

The Shongweni community has until 12 February to submit their comments.

THE deadline for the comments period on the draft addendum in support of the proposed Shongweni Landfill site has been extended to Friday, 12 February.

According to Bathabile Msomi, assistant consultant at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, Environment and Energy, Africa, WSP Environmental Pty Ltd was appointed to collate additional information required by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DEDTEA) in support of the application for a waste management licence (WML) for the proposed Shongweni Landfill site. In 1996, Durban Solid Waste (DSW) initiated a process to secure regional general waste landfill sites to cater for future waste disposal for eThekwini.

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) was undertaken and a final report was submitted in March 2010 to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development. A revised addendum report to the 2010 report was distributed to all relevant authorities and made available to registered stakeholders and the public for review and comment from 5 January to 3 February. Stakeholders then requested an extension of the comment period to provide them adequate time to review the document. The comment period for the draft addendum report has been extended to 12 February.

The documents are in the Hillcrest Library, 22 Delamore Road, for scrutiny in the mornings. Comments can be submitted to Bathabile Msomi via post at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, Environment and Energy, Africa, Block A, 1 Langford Road, Westville, 3629, faxed to 031 240 8861 or e-mailed to bathabile.msomi@wspgroup.co.za. All comments received will be incorporated into the final addendum report for submission to the department. To ensure that your comments are incorporated into the final addendum report, please ensure that they are received before 5pm on Friday, 12 February.
