UPDATE: Three armed men killed in Malvern

The Malevrn SAPS responded to a tip off about a car being stolen in Malvern, realising they were being persued, the suspects opened fire and a high speed chase ensued.

On Friday, 22 January at 5:30pm, Malvern SAPS responded to a report of an ongoing theft of a car at a parking lot on Coronation Walk. “The call was immediately dispatched to the SAPS Malvern Crime Prevention officers, who sped to the scene.

They spotted the VW Jetta with the suspects speeding off from the scene. A high-speed chase ensued. In the interim, the other Crime Prevention vehicles blocked off the exit points,” said corporate communications officer, W/O Radhika Marimuthu.

The chase continued, with the suspects firing at the police. In their quest to get away, the suspects turned into 1st Avenue, which is a dead end, and crashed the vehicle. “The suspects came out of the vehicle and shot at the members. The members returned fire, fatally wounding three of the five suspects,” she said. The remaining two suspects fled with the police hot on their heels. The K-9 unit was called out and as darkness fell, the search for the suspects continued.

“Three firearms were recovered on the suspects. The search continues for the remaining suspects. Investigations reveal that the deceased suspects were linked to crimes in the greater Durban area,” added W/O Marimuthu. No police officers were injured during the incident.

Station commander, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy, expressed her pride in the excellent work done by the Crime Prevention Unit. She further commended the work done by the officers and said it left her with a sense of pride, and she knows that incident will severely dent any further criminal enterprise in the area.
