Top 10 tips to stay safe in wet weather

With a downpour set for most of the weekend, below are 10 tips to help make sure you and your family are safe this rainy weekend.

ACCORDING to ER24 spokesman, Chitra Bodasing, driving in wet conditions increases chances of being in a collision. “Rain affects visibility. Visibility of vehicles, pedestrians, the road, road signs and possible dangers such as potholes and items that are swept onto the road, may be hindered during these conditions,” said Bodasing.

  1. Check your windscreen wipers. Ensure that they are in good working order. If not, replace them immediately.
  2. Listen to weather and traffic reports to see if there is a heavy downpour and if flooding or certain roads are closed to traffic.
  3. Ensure your headlights are on when driving in the rain. Pay close attention to what is happening around you and keep a safe following distance.
  4. Do not speed. “Refrain from breaking or accelerating harshly. You could easily lose control of the vehicle in wet weather,” said Bodasing.
  5. Do not be impatient while driving. Driving to your destination in these conditions may take longer but rather get to your destination safely instead of rushing and risking your life and that of others.
  6. Avoid driving through puddles, flowing water and waterlogged bridges.
  7. Remember that heavy downpour or storms can result in trees being uprooted, tree branches falling into the roads as well as other dangerous items flowing onto the road.
  8. If there is low visibility, pull over in a safe area (if possible) and wait for the rain to ease up. Remember to keep your headlights and hazard lights on.
  9. Remember that oil and other dirt is washed onto roads and poses as the roads can become slippery. Drive with caution at all times.
  10. Highway residents are also urged not to walk in rainy, low visibility weather.
