Tree of Light brightens Durban sky
This year's event was Christmas themed and a variety of dedicated volunteer musicians sang their hearts out to entertain the audience.
DESPITE unsettled weather, the Highway Hospice’s annual Tree of Light event enjoyed a great turn out on Friday, 4 December.
Families came out in numbers to picnic in Jameson Park in Durban to support the non-profit organisation’s most important appeal for the year. The gathering was a beautiful and touching ceremony and was also a time to remember loved ones who had passed on.
This year’s event was Christmas themed and a variety of dedicated volunteer musicians sang their hearts out to entertain the audience. The hospice’s Heather Walker said people were often in generous spirit of giving and remembering loved ones at this time of the year.
“As the year draws to an end, often your thoughts turn to loved ones who are no longer with us. Your support is important to us, as it enables us to continue our programme of love and care to the terminally ill and their families,” she said.
The anticipated lighting of the tree took place at 7.45pm with more than 9 000 globes lit up with soft radiance. The tree will light up the Durban sky throughout December. Although the tree has been lit up, donors and the public are still invited to buy a globe for R50 each, honouring the memory of a loved one.
