Molweni taxi boss killed in ambush

There's no clear motive behind the attack that claimed the life of the taxi owner and left two other men injured.

A TAXI owner from the Molweni-Wyebank Taxi Association was gunned down in an ambush in Molweni on Thursday, 3 December.

According to Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Cst Ndumiso Manqele, taxi owner, Khayelihle Malinga, was driving his car with two passengers at the time of the attack.

“At around 9am, they were ambushed by three gunmen who opened fire on them with AK-47s and 9mm pistols, which resulted in the death of Malinga. The other two men in the car were critically-injured and taken to hospital,” said Manqele.

It is understood the gunmen fled the scene of the crime in a white Toyota Corolla getaway car.

“At this stage of the investigation, there’s no clear motive behind the attack that claimed the life of the taxi owner and left two other men injured,” added Manqele.

A case of murder and two cases of attempted murder have been opened at the Hillcrest police station. No arrests have been made.

The Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison issued a statement condemning the attack and MEC Willies Mchunu expressed his shock at the incident and warned ‘those who seek to bring instability in the province’ would be dealt with harshly.
