Bellair SAPS warns residents of area crimes

On Friday at 12.30am the owner of a complex found that the gates were left open and a car, valued at R60 000, was stolen.

FOLLOWING recent criminal activities related to motor vehicles and house robberies in the area, the Bellair SAPS have issued a statement reminding residents to be alert to thieves and to be cautious on the road. The following reports are from separate incidents the police responded to.

– On Monday, 26 October a house on 3rd Street, Hillary, was broken into via the bathroom window while the owners were away. A forty inch television valued at R10 000 was stolen from the property. Residents are cautioned to secure all doors and windows when leaving their houses.

-On the same Monday, Constable Falakhe Khanyile was patrolling unit avenue, informal settlement in the Bellair area where he arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of dagga. Constable Wonderboy Miya was patrolling the same area at that time, and he too arrested a man for being in possession of dagga. The 28-year-old was arrested and detained at SAPS Bellair. Both men will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.

– On Tuesday, 27 October Constable Selvan Perumal and W/O Kevin Munien were patrolling the Seaview area when they approached a man who was behaving in a suspicious manner. He was found to be in possession of 16 straws of heroin. The man then began to violently resist arrest. The police official requested help and the suspect was arrested. He was detained and charged at SAPS Bellair. The 27-year-old man will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of dealing in heroin, resisting arrest and assault of a police officer.

– On Wednesday, 28 October at 11pm, a white bakkie was parked in a secured residence on Coedmore Road, Seaview. The owner had parked his car at the mechanic’s residence for it to be repaired. The next day, the mechanic awoke to discover that the car, valued at R40 000, was not on his property.

– On Thursday, 29 October at 11.30pm a maroon Mazda was parked on Sommerby Gardens complex on Wakesleigh Road, Bellair. On Friday at 12.30am the owner found that the complex gates were left open and the car, valued at R60 000, was stolen.

– On Saturday, 31 October at 9.30am, a resident on Bayswater Road, Hillary, looked out of her window and saw her vehicle moving. She saw a blue tow truck and a man busy hitching up her car and about to drive away. When the tow truck man noticed he was being observed, he unhitched the car and fled.
