Mazarat farm under new management

“We want Mazarat to be a safe haven where children can experience the joy of all things natural.”

MAZARAT Farm in Waterfall is now under new management and will be run by Sally and Sue Rae.

Sally and Sue grew up on the grounds of the farm and learnt not only how to ride there but developed a love of animals and for the farm. Anne Carkeek, affectionately known by them as ‘Aunty Anne’, will still be a part of the team.

“Mazarat Farm has been a landmark in Waterfall for as long as most can remember. Both the riding school and the Pets Country Club Kennels have seen many a resident pass through their gates,” said Sally.

“My sister and I were so privileged to have had the opportunity to grow up on these grounds. Our mission is to share that privilege with as many children as possible.”

The Raes have begun with a major upgrade on all existing facilities, including a big ‘do-over’ of the kennels. Their vision is to ensure that Mazarat remains a green lung in the Waterfall area and to develop the farm into a recreational, educational and agricultural gem.

Envisaged projects include an organic farm, an animal-assisted learning programme for children with esteem or learning challenges, a venue for children’s parties with the Mazarat ponies, a small petting zoo, children’s recreational area and a nature trail.

Duane Stander of Concept Cyclery is also hard at work building a mountain bike track in order to host the second round of the KZN mountain biking and off-road championship at Mazarat in March 2016.

“We want Mazarat to be a safe haven where children can experience the joy of all things natural,” said Sally. “We will also continue with Anne’s legacy, and the animal rescuing to re-home pets whose owners cannot look after them any more will remain.”

The kennels are now open for boarders over the festive season and their mission is to give pets a home away from home during their stay. Contact Margie on 082 695 4148.
