Tips to minimise road accidents

Road safety can not be over-emphasised and everyone has the responsibility to ensure it.

A NUMBER of people have either been injured or killed in accidents across several parts of the country in just over a week. ER24 attended to incidents around the country that claimed the lives of at least 17 people. More than 80 people sustained minor to critical injuries.

Incidents included that of one person who was killed and 13 others who were injured in a taxi roll-over in KwaZulu-Natal.

Below are some tips to avoid becoming a victim of a car accident:

Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy.

Refrain from speeding.

Be mindful of other road users.

Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol.

Do not allow yourself to become distracted while driving.

Keep a safe following distance.

Do not become aggressive or resort to road rage.

Refrain from skipping stop signs and red traffic lights. Be cautious when changing lanes.

Avoid texting or talking on your cellphone while driving.

If there are children in the vehicle, ensure that they are appropriately restrained.

With the festive season fast approaching, people are urged to plan ahead. If you are driving to your destination, remember to conduct a safety check on your vehicle prior to leaving. Check if any of the tyres need replacing and that wiper blades, headlights and signal lights are working. And lastly, make sure you have enough rest when taking long journeys.
