Fireworks season takes a toll on the SPCA

The Kloof SPCA is expecting more stray animals to be brought in after two days of fireworks and urges owners to go and fetch them.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA is urgently appealing to owners whose pets have gone missing during the last two days (Tuesday, 10 and Wednesday, 11 November) due to the fireworks to check if they are in the kennels.

Owners with missing pets are urged to go through to the Kloof and Highway SPCA as soon as possible as an owner would be the best person to identify their own pet.

So far, 21 animals were taken in to the Kloof and Highway SPCA over the Diwali period. Of those 21 animals, nine animals have so far been claimed by their families.

Lisa Gadd, PR for the Kloof SPCA, said they are expecting more stray animals to be brought in. “The after-hours emergency number received numerous calls on Wednesday night, with all our inspectors being on standby and responding to calls regarding stray animals.

“Every year the Kloof and Highway SPCA appeal to the community to prepare and to take steps to protect their pets during the fireworks season, and we will continue to do so.”

Barbara Patrick of the SPCA said she would like to personally thank the staff, volunteers and kind members of the public who have worked tirelessly during this Guy Fawkes and Diwali period.

“These incredible people made sure that the animals in our community were reunited with their owners or taken into the safety of the Kloof and Highway SPCA for their owners to claim them.

“People left their families and pets to drive around in the dark and the rain to make sure animals were rescued. Thank you to everyone,” said Patrick.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, and Saturday from 8am to noon, and on the last Sunday of the month from 9am to 1pm.
