Robbers pose as municipal workers in Assagay

Residents are warned of muncipal worker scam.

Brazen robbers posing as eThekwini Municipality workers ambushed and robbed an Assagay resident outside her property in broad daylight on Thursday, 3 September.

Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, said the resident had just arrived home from the bank and had stopped at her driveway in Assagay Road at around 1.40pm when she was approached by three men who were wearing municipal workers’ uniforms.

“They demanded her car keys, and when she refused they grabbed her necklace and tried to remove her rings and bracelet. They fled with her necklace and handbag containing her cellphone, purse, cash and other valuables. The victim was slightly injured during the robbery but did not require immediate medical attention,” said Jackson.

Jackson advised residents to be vigilant when arriving and leaving their homes and to check for any suspicious individuals or vehicles parked nearby.

“Driveways are hotspots for armed robberies and hijackings, and as this incident shows one can never be too vigilant or take the presence of anyone in the area at face value. Criminals use blue overalls over their clothes in an attempt to blend into suburbs where there may be any manner of municipal employees and other contract workers on legitimate business in the area.

“The safest choice is to not open up your driveway gate unless the immediate area is clear of any potential dangers,” he added.

He also advised residents to rather take a drive around the block and to call the police or their security company if there are still people loitering outside.
