Residents say roadworks are a nightmare

The construction on Kings and Anderson Road is disturbing residents at night.

Residents from Kings and Anderson Roads in Pinetown are between a rock and a hard place with the roadworks that take place right outside their homes at night.

“Each night is torture. People need a full night’s sleep to function properly at work,” said resident, Alvi Hamid.

“We don’t get to sleep, my daughter has become very reckless at school because she doesn’t get enough sleep,” said another resident, Pria Pillay.

The residents say they understand that the construction needs to take place to improve the roads.

Jeffrey Sochrae, another resident, said he has to put on earphones in order to sleep.

Resident Edgar Chogumaira said the timing is wrong: “All we are asking is that they do it at more reasonable times,” he said.

Carlos Esteves, deputy manager of the Road System Management ETA, has confirmed that the construction on Kings and Anderson falls under GO!Durban. They are working at night on this intersection and scheduled for completion at the end of this week.

“Work is being done at night to ensure there is minimal interruption to the traffic during the day and to fast-track the project to minimise the duration of construction,” said Esteves.

Night works will still occur at intersections for approximately five nights per intersection (there are four: Sunnyside/Anderson, Kings/Anderson, Union/Anderson and Josiah Gumede/Anderson).

“We apologise for any inconvenience and request that those affected please bear with us, as we bring a more efficient, safer and reliable public transport system to this area and Durban as a whole,” Esteves added.
