Man shot by security guard in petrol station argument

A 26-year-old suspect was arrested for the murder of a man in a shooting incident which took place on Friday, 14 August.

A man was killed when he was shot multiple times by a security guard during an argument on Friday, 14 August, on Westmead Road in Pinetown.

First to arrive at the scene of the crime was Andreas Mathios of SACAN emergency line.

“We received an alert on Friday afternoon through our network radio about an incident in progress after one of our subscribed clients heard several gunshots. Upon arrival, the SACAN team immediately alerted ER24 and SAPS officers, who were quick to respond and arrived within minutes,” said Mathios.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, responded to the scene and on arrival found the body of a man lying next to a bakkie. The man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and back.

“On assessment, paramedics found that the man had succumbed to his injuries and was certified dead on the scene,” said ER24 spokesman, Russel Meiring.

According to Pinetown SAPS spokesman, Lt Bongumusa Manqele, on Friday at around 3.50pm the suspect, known to be a security guard, was on duty at the Shell Truck Stop in Westmead Road, Westmead, when the victim, believed to be in his 50s, entered the premises to fill up with diesel. It is alleged that there was an argument between the suspect and the victim over the signing of a register at the main entrance and the victim was shot three times by the security guard.

After the shooting incident, the suspect locked himself in a public toilet to avoid community confrontation.

“Ashley Neighbourhood Watch sent patrollers to help with containing curious onlookers and our team proceeded to cordon off the scene and preserve it for forensic investigation,” added Mathios.

The 26-year-old surrendered himself to detectives upon arrival of the Pinetown SAPS and Durban K9 Unit. He appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder on Monday, 17 August. He was remanded with no bail into Westville Prison and will appear again in court on Wednesday, 26 August.

A trauma counsellor from the Open Door Crisis Care Centre and was also called to the scene of the crime when the man’s wife and daughters arrived.
