UPDATE: Fuel tanker crash causes serious damage to N2

"After the fire was extinguished, we discovered that the road had melted."

THE clean-up of the diesel and petrol tanker that collided earlier this morning on the N2 freeway are well underway, said Ward 65 Councillor, Chris van den Burg.

This comes after his visit to the site to asses the probable damage on the road and infrastructure. “After the fire was extinguished, we discovered that the road had melted. The fire department team were busy washing up tar debris to get the road ready to be fixed,” he said.

Other assessments revealed that the blaze caused minor infrastructural damage. Depending on the swiftness of the team cleaning up, said Andreas Mathios of SACan, the road may be opened shortly, but only one lane in each direction.

The Sarnia Road Bridge will be fully inspected later today to determine its integrity and safety for use again. The blaze was extinguished just after 5am. The N2 freeway was closed in both directions due to safety reason this morning after the trucks collided and caught fire. Drivers are urged to take alternate routes.
