UPDATE: Fuel tanker blaze closes N2 highway

A diesel and petrol tanker crashed on the N2, causing a massive fire to spread across the highway.

THE accident at around 4am this morning on the N2 under the Sarnia Road bridge resulted in the closure of the highway in both directions.

According to a report from one of the drivers, one truck was parked in the breakdown lane when another truck rear-ended it. The driver then veered across the road and collided with the Armco barriers between the north and south-bound lanes.

The fire department, ambulance services, police and traffic officials arrived at the scene and found both trucks ablaze, with flammable products from the tanker spilling out, spreading the fire down the road. Both drivers managed to escape with no injuries.

The blaze was extinguished just after 5am. The highway will remain closed after sterling work from the fire fighters involved. The highway is still closed in both directions due to safety reasons. The integrity of the road and overhead bridge need to be checked due to possible damage caused by the heat of the massive fire. Drivers are urged to take alternate routes.
