Elderly woman survives brutal torture

A Waterfall resident was recently attacked, tied up, gagged and assaulted by a woman known to her.

A 68-YEAR-old Waterfall resident had to receive medical treatment and trauma counselling after she was tied up, choked and gagged by a 34-year-old woman who resided on the same premises.

The woman, who lives in Rowles Avenue, Waterfall revealed details about the horrific ordeal under the condition of anonymity in fear of reprisals. The torturous act, which lasted for around two hours, began when the woman went into her house to take a break from gardening and make a cup of coffee. She was severely beaten up by the accused when she was approached by the woman, who is known to her. She asked the accused if she could help her with something and she replied by saying that she was there to kill the elderly woman, who lives alone in her cottage.

Steven King of Waterfall Crime Watch and Securelink said, “The suspect proceeded to push the victim around and she fell to the ground. The suspect pulled her to the bedroom where she was tied up with her arms and feet to the back and around her neck. She put a scarf in her mouth and gagged her. She then proceed to kick and jump on her. She then tried to strangle her and tried to pull her air pipe (larynx) to break it. The victim had to fight to keep her head down. She thought she was going to die, as the suspect kept telling her, ‘Today is your last day’.

“The suspect eventually turned her around and propped her up against a cupboard and asked her for money. She stole a laptop, R1 400, three rings and a cellphone.

“The suspect then fled on foot. The victim managed to get her feet loose and jumped to a window, which she pushed open with her head. She tried screaming, but couldn’t as a result of her injury. She then managed to get a hammer and started breaking windows with her hands still tied behind her back. A neighbour heard the noise and went over and saw the victim. The neighbour alerted the Hillcrest SAPS and ER24.

“She was treated on scene and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Pinetown for additional treatment. The suspect was arrested in Mahatma Gandhi (Point) Road after she contacted her fellow tenants, who are renting the main house from the victim, and told them to go and see if the victim is alive as she was robbed by two men. The tenants then asked her where she was and they notified the SAPS, who went out and arrested her. The laptop, cellphone and one ring were recovered from the suspect. She is currently in police custody and has been charged.

The victim would like to thank the Hillcrest SAPS, ER24 and those who helped her during this ordeal. South African Community Crime Watch and Securelink assisted the woman to receive counselling.
