Suspects nabbed in joint initiative

A local security company partnered with police and residents in a joint initiative to combat crime.

A GROUP of suspects, including alleged trespassers, cable thieves and housebreakers, were arrested during a joint effort by a local security company, police and residents. The arrests were made within a six-day period in the Highway area recently.

Brian Jackson, Blue Security operations manager, said, “The arrests had been made in Crestholme, Westville, Pinetown and New Germany during the past week. A pair of alleged cable thieves, a man and a woman, were arrested in New Germany in the early hours of last Saturday morning after they allegedly cut the overhead power cable in Janine Road. They were handed over to the Pinetown SAPS, which attended the scene of the crime.

Meanwhile, an employee of a business in Livingstone Road in Pinetown was arrested last week for allegedly stealing three packets of soup. Pinetown SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

“A business house-breaking was averted in Pineside Road in New Germany when a worker on night shift duty noticed a gang in a silver RunX arrive at the gate premises and activated a panic button. The gang managed to derail the driveway gate and fled when the worker sounded the alarm. Officers from the Pinetown SAPS who were patrolling the area gave chase and arrested two suspects.”

In a separate incident, an armed response officer chased and arrested a housebreaker in Newbury Drive in New Germany, while a robber was arrested in Shepstone Road near New Germany Primary School after two men robbed a pedestrian at knife point and fled with his cellphone.

“One of our patrolling officers saw the incident take place in broad daylight and he and the victim then chased the robbers, and the victim managed to arrest one of the men, who was then handed over to the Pinetown SAPS at the scene. We will continue to be vigilant and to work closely with residents and the police to rid our neighbourhoods and business precincts of criminals so people can feel safe in their homes and workplaces again,” he said.
