Family of deceased robbery victim speaks out

The man who died as a result of the injuries he sustained during an armed robbery was described as a caring and protective person.

THE victim who succumbed to a gunshot injury sustained during an armed robbery has been identified as Faizel Iqbal. The 37-year-old father of two was at home with his sister and her two children at the time of the incident.

Thaslem Iqbal spoke to the Highway Mail about the traumatic ordeal and said they are still trying to come to terms with the death of her brother. “We were at home, enjoying a cup of tea, when a group of men entered our house through the front door and ordered us to lie on the floor. One of the men wore a balaclava. They were all well-dressed and spoke fluent English. My brother tried to protect us and he was shot once in the neck. There were between eight and 10 gunshots fired during the time, between my brother and the armed robber.

Describing her brother, who was an upholsterer, Thaslem added, “He was a brave, funny, protective and caring person, always full of laughter. He was in the process of opening his own business.”

Thaslem is currently seeking counselling for her children to help them deal with the horrific incident. Fortunately, she and her children did not sustain any injuries during the robbery. Four months ago, Thaslem’s vehicle was also stolen from her yard, but it was recovered by her brother.
