Two illegal guns recovered in KwaNdengezi

A 63-year-old man was found in possession of an AK-47 in Zwelibomvu Reserve, KwaNdengezi.

TWO men who were arrested for possession of unlicensed guns would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The SAPS Chatsworth Cluster Crime Intelligence unit held an intelligence-driven operation in KwaNdengezi together with the National Mobile Train Unit (NMTU) on Thursday morning.

Col Jay Naicker, KZN police spokesman, said police arrested a man (29) in KwaNdengezi for being in possession of a firearm with an erased serial number.

“While in Zwelibomvu Reserve in KwaNdengezi they arrested a 63-year-old man who was found with an AK-47 rifle and ammunition in his possession.

“Both firearms were seized and will be forwarded for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime,” said Naicker.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the action taken by the police officials to arrest the perpetrators of crime as well as the seizure of firearms.

“KZN police have adopted a zero tolerance approach to criminality and our dedicated officers will go beyond the call of duty to bring criminals to justice.

“We will continue with intelligence-driven operations and encourage residents to join the SAPS in our war on crime by providing us with information of known criminal activity,” she said.
