‘Traditional healer’ defrauds woman of R132 000

KwaDabeka SAPS arrested a bogus traditional healer for allegedly defrauding a 39-year-old woman in Clermont of R132 000.

A CON artist traditional healer was arrested by KwaDabeka Police in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 28 April.

The ‘healer’, a foreign national woman (33), was wanted by the police for allegedly defrauding a 39-year-old woman in Clermont of R132 000.

According to KwaDabeka SAPS communications officer, W/O Sibusiso Ngcobo, the complainant responded to an advert which she heard on the radio about a traditional healer who can solve all kinds of problems.

The announcement advertised a traditional healer who could help with work problems and chase away bad luck, saying to contact the number 078 275 8197.

“She then called the number and met the woman in Zazi Road in Clermont. The woman alleged that she could also multiply money through ancestors,” said Ngcobo.

The complainant saw this as a good option as she was experiencing problems at work.

Ngcobo said the woman was told to pay R32 000 up front, which she did, and was told that her ancestors wanted her to resign from work so that they could make her rich.

“The ‘healer’ asked for R100 000 from her resignation money so that her ancestors could multiply it.

“The complainant realised when the woman brought back counterfeit money mixed with black papers that she was being robbed,” he said.

The ‘healer’ disappeared and a case was opened at the KwaDabeka Police Station.

“As part of the investigation police called the woman’s number and pretended to be clients. They were asked to meet her in Pietermaritzburg and she was arrested in Market Street.”

The woman is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.
