Bike champs crowned at Giba Gorge final

Overall series winner Hilton Frost put in an impressive time of 12 minutes and 29 seconds.

THE final round of the KZNMTB Series saw 115 riders competing for the Enduro title across the various age categories, which consisted of four testing special stages spanning over 20km on Saturday, 18 April at  Giba Gorge MTB Park in Pinetown.

The overall series winner and first-placed rider on Saturday was Hilton Frost from Pietermaritzburg with an impressive time of 12 minutes and 29 seconds.

Second place on the day, with a time of 12 minutes and 51 seconds, went to Timothy Bentley from Hilton, with Jedson Tooms from Pietermaritzburg being announced as runner-up in the overall Enduro series despite coming in fourth on race day.

In the women’s category the overall series winner and winner on Saturday, who dominated throughout the series and rode the final event with a heavily strapped arm, was Kim Westbrook from Pietermaritzburg with an outstanding time of 16 minutes and 51 seconds.

A fantastic ride by Pietermaritzburg’s sub-junior on Saturday, Sabien Thies, saw her claim second place after Westbrook with a time of 17 minutes and 20 seconds, as well as runner-up spot in the overall Enduro series.

Jarryd Smith, NMI-DSM and Mercedes-Benz Umhlanga’s marketing manager, said, “Judging by the number of participants and the positive reactions we had throughout the series at every venue, I have no doubt this series will continue to grow in popularity,” he said.

The KZN Championships will be held on Saturday, 6 and Sunday, 7 June at the Cascades Mountain Biking Park in Pietermaritzburg, where the series winner for the downhill discipline will also be decided.
