ANC councillors in court for murder

Mduduzi Ngcobo and Luvelile Lutyelu were granted bail of R10 000 each.

CHAOS erupted outside the Pinetown Magistrate Court as ANC Ward 12 councillor and PR councillor appeared for a murder case on Friday.

The two councillors were arrested on Thursday 26 February for the murder of Thuli Ndlovu, chairman of Abahlali baseMjondolo, a shack dwellers’ organisation.

Ndlovu was shot seven times at her house in KwaNdengezi on September 29 last year.

Two groups protested outside the courtroom, supporters of the councillors and the shack dwellers. They were both granted a bail of R10 000 each.

Thembani Ngongoma, national spokesman of Abahlali baseMjondolo said they are not happy about the court decision.

“We know that it not up to us, the police or the prosecutor to decide on the outcome of the bail hearing.
“We also understand that it is in constitution that a person is innocent until proven guilty but are scared that witnesses will be in danger,” said Ngongoma.

Nada Ngcobo, treasurer of the Blessing Ninela Zone said this is just a plot against the ANC. “We are very happy about the ruling,” said Ngcobo.

The two are due back in court on Tuesday, 26 May.
