Five nabbed with unlicensed guns

Firearms that were recovered from five men in Pinetown will be sent for ballistics tests to determine whether they were used during any other crimes

FIVE men appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 March for possession of a suspected hijacked vehicle, unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Cst Phindile Radebe, said Pinetown Crime Prevention police were doing their normal patrols in the Pinetown CBD when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle parked along Breightmet Avenue.

“The police approached the car, which had five occupants inside.

“They searched the vehicle and recovered two guns and five rounds of ammunition. Police also recovered R15 000 cash from one of the men,” she said.

Radebe added that preliminary investigations revealed that the car was hijacked in Kokstad earlier this month, and cash was also stolen from the owner of the vehicle.

The men, aged between 18 and 24, were remanded into custody. They are due back in the dock on Monday, 23 March.

Firearms will be sent for ballistics tests to determine whether they were used in the commission of any other crimes in the province.
