Scores of dead fish found in polluted Umbilo River

Dead fish floated in the Umbilo River in Queensburgh on Wednesday just days after a massive chemical company premises burnt down.

SCORES of dead fish were found in the Umbilo River in Queensburgh on Wednesday, 11 February.

Ward councillor, André Mitchell, contacted Queensburgh News on Wednesday with the information that dead fish were found on the property of the acclaimed Queensburgh Caravan Park. Among the dead fish were also dead eels. Thick foam was also seen flowing down the river.

The dead fish surfaced just days after a chemical factory in Westmead burnt down on Saturday, spilling chemicals into the river. On Sunday the Umbilo River water was purple as a result of the chemicals.

It has not yet been confirmed what chemical spilled into the river, but the Department of Water Affairs took samples on scene and is currently having it tested.
