Chemical factory fire allegedly linked to Umbilo pollution

Residents living on the banks of the Umbilo River in Pinetown believe the Westmead factory fire and Umbilo River pollution may be linked.

LOCAL residents who live along the Umbilo River banks in Pinetown believe the factory fire on Saturday night, and Sunday’s pollution of the Umbilo River, may be linked.

A source said it is believed the foam on the river was caused by fire fighters’ product residue. It is still unclear what caused the water to turn purple, although it is believed to be chemicals from the burnt down factory that have washed down the river. Many residents reportedly suffered from headaches following the river pollution, but it is not clear whether the headaches were linked to the pollution.

On Saturday Highway Mail reported that the factory, in Mahogany Ridge Industrial Park, was collapsing as a result of the fire.

According to a source at the scene last night the fire broke out at 6.05pm at the factory that allegedly houses various chemicals.

Then, on Sunday morning, residents reported that the Umbilo River was running purple due to suspected pollution. It has been reported that representatives from water affairs were on scene at the river and the factory.
