Westville man and robbers exchange shots

A Westville man and seven robbers were involved in a shootout at the weekend following the theft of his vehicle.

A SHOOTOUT and high speed chase broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning when a Westville resident took on seven armed robbers who fled in his stolen car.

Brian Jackson, Blue Security operations manager, said the gang of seven robbers derailed the driveway gate of the resident’s house in Sunnybrae Drive before stealing his white Toyota Fortuner.

“The resident heard a loud bang outside and looked through his window to see the gang standing at his car with the bonnet open. They had already managed to disarm the car’s central locking system,” Jackson said.

“When the gang saw the resident they fired several shots at him and the resident then returned fire, hitting the vehicle. He then chased the gang as they fled in his car. He managed to recover his vehicle on the M19,” he said.

Westville SAPS attended the scene and the vehicle was taken to the police station for further investigation, he added.

In a separate incident in Homestead Road in Westville two robbers, armed with knives, held up a domestic worker on Friday afternoon as she was leaving the property. “The men robbed her of her handbag containing cash and fled the scene. Fortunately, the domestic worker was not injured during the robbery,” he said.

Another woman was also lucky to escape an attempted rape after a man accosted her in Shongweni just before 9am on Monday morning.

“The attacker assaulted the woman in the bush in Clifton Canyon Road but she managed to escape unharmed. The attacker is still at large, and we urge women walking alone to be especially vigilant in the area,” said Jackson.
