Bus drivers strike, commuters stranded

Commuters have been left stranded following a strike by bus drivers.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has released a statement informing all commuters utilising the municipality’s bus service, operated by private operator, Tansnat, of the interruption of the service in all areas due to a strike by bus drivers. The municipality said on 31 December the majority of bus drivers downed tools and the service was being run by skeleton staff.

“However, due to incidents of intimidation, including the firing of shots towards a bus at Gwala’s House in Ntuzuma yesterday, all drivers have, from 2 January, decided not to get behind the wheel,” said eThekwini’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

The drivers are complaining about their unpaid salaries for December 2014 and annual bonuses. The municipality apologised to all commuters for the inconvenience caused.
Customers are urged to make alternative travel arrangements during this interruption. The municipality is engaging with the operator to find a permanent solution to the challenges.
