Reward offered for missing K9 unit dog

Have you seen the K9's Rottweiler named Chaka?

A REWARD has been offered for the safe return of Chaka, a Rottweiler from the Shongweni K9 Unit that went missing on Friday.

According to Steven King of the South African Community Crime Watch, the male K9, with no tail, went missing after it was released to tackle some robbers at Wiltshire Road, off Hans Dettman Road in Pinetown on Friday 18 October around 2am. The dog never returned. The SAPS conducted an aerial search for Chaka on Friday.

“We’ve received a call from someone claiming they spotted the dog on the railway line which runs from the search area through to Shallcross, Mariannhill and Dassenhoek, as well as Mount Vernon and Rossburgh, which is in the opposite direction. We will be searching that area today,” said King.

Andreas Matthois from SA CAN and who also helped coordinate the Neighbourhood Watches Association, set up two mobile incident management centres at the weekend – one in the area where Chaka went missing and another at the office.

They used two way radios, radio controlled aircraft and other GPS systems, as well as 60 volunteers from the Pinetown and Queensburgh area searching on foot for Chaka, but sadly were unable to locate the Rottweiler.

“We are currently working on a positive lead that the dog could be in the Mariannhill SAPS vicinity. I have been working closely with the dog handler and Capt Neil Thaver and we are hoping to locate Chaka soon,” said Matthios.

He added that a substantial amount has been offered as a reward for the safe return of Chaka, however was not willing to disclose the amount at this stage. If you see Chaka, please contact Steven on 082 920 5799 or Capt Neil Thaver of the Shongweni K9 Unit on 083 321 7285.
