No bail for Kloof drug lab accused, say protesters

The three men who were arrested for the drug bust in Kloof appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate's Court this morning.

CHANCERY Lane in Pinetown was closed as people were picketed outside the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking and members of the community joined forces to make sure that the three men arrested in connection with the drug bust in Kloof who made their second court appearance today, do not get bail.

The drugs are now reported to have a value of R20 million instead of R3 billion as it was initially reported.

The MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal Weziwe Thusi was also present.

Coordinator of Ekuzameni Rehabilitation Home, Joyce Hlophe which is a home for abused women was also among the crowd picketing outside the court.

“In my organisation we deal a lot with people who have been affected by the abuse of drugs.

“Drugs kill our nation, people do terrible things when they are high. They are the cause of poverty, domestic violence even the increase of people affected with HIV/AIDS. School children can not concentrate because of the drugs.

“The drugs are everywhere nowadays and are easily obtainable. Justice must play its role here and sentence the people who are dealing in drugs,” said Hlophe.

The trio will appear in court on Friday 18 July.
