Smartphone helps secure conviction

A stolen smartphone helped a Westville SAPS detective to track down and convict an attempted murderer.

THE Pinetown Regional Court recently sentenced Lindani Sithole to a 20 year sentence for robbery and attempted murder .

According to Sgt Steven Clark, of the Westville SAPS, Sithole (21) attacked, stabbed and robbed an 85-year-old woman in her home, in a residential complex in Westville North in January 2011, before he fled the scene.

“Through intense investigation, Detective Warrant Officer Thulani Dludla traced the suspect, arrested him and recovered the stolen property. He also managed to successfully link him to a common robbery at the same complex that had occurred two days after the first,” said Clark.

Sithole was tracked via a smartphone that he had stolen from the 85-year-old woman’s handbag during the first robbery.

“For the crime of attempted murder and house robbery the accused was handed a 15 year sentence and for the second robbery he received another five years,” said Clark.
