Fabulous reads – Gripping crime novel will not let you go

Book review for Gareth Crocker's Never Let Go.

Never Let Go, Gareth Crocker

WHAT lengths would you go to bring a loved one back to life? This topic is explored in Gareth Crocker’s latest crime novel, Never Let Go .The story follows Reece Cole, a critically acclaimed writer and doting father, whose five-year-old daughter is murdered in a kidnapping gone wrong. It is often said that a parent should never have to bury a child and living without his precious daughter Ruby is something he can’t come to grips with, and he attempts to take his own life only a few short seconds after her untimely death.

His suicide attempt backfires and he wakes up in a hospital bed weeks later, almost miraculously recovered from the injuries. As soon as he is released he attempts to take his own life again but notices his daughter’s hand prints on a windowpane in her favourite play area.

A few moments later a stranger leaves a note in his post box, promising that he knows a way to bring Ruby back into the world of the living.

The book is incredibly fast paced, which is partly due to the short, yet numerous chapters. There are a few loopholes in the storyline that are easily over-shadowed by the rest of the book’s blistering pace.
