The BMW X5 and X6 M Competition models might feature the same engine but remains distinctly dissimilar in design. The X5 M Competition is classified as a sports activity vehicle or SAV whereas the X6 M Competition falls within the sports activity coupe or SAC segment, however, both carry the dynamics, agility and precision BMW X models have become known for.

Both models have the same in proportions as its more subdued variants but now feature larger air intakes on the lower front bumpers and double bars on the signature kidney grille and can be specified in a special BMW Individual paint finish, a first time for BMW X models. The side panel is enhanced with M gills while atop both models features a roof/rear spoiler. At the rear, the design incorporates a new rear apron with diffuser elements and two sets of twin tailpipes to finish off the package. Both models also come fitted with 21-inch light-alloy wheels at the front and 22-inch light-alloy wheels at the rear not only to contribute to the sporty theme but also benefit braking and handling performance.

The interiors also come bolstered with M‑specific cockpit design elements and BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific readouts and occupants also benefit from a raised seating position. The M multifunction seats feature alongside fine-grain Merino full leather trim as standard equipment on both Competition models. The driver also gains access to setup buttons for engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking system settings with two overall setups easily selected by using the M buttons on the steering wheel and is afforded a choice of predetermined road, sport and track settings.

The M mode also allows the driver to individually configure assistance system interventions, instrument cluster displays and Head-Up Display readouts. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation system and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and the Parking Assistant comes as standard while customers can optionally select a variety of driver assistance systems and the BMW Laser light system.

As earlier alluded to, both the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition models come fitted with a 4.4-litre V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology and delivering 460 kW and 750 N.m of torque. The power is delivered to all four wheels via the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission featuring Drivelogic and the M xDrive all‑wheel-drive system. The xDrive system is rear-biased but can be adjusted to deliver more power to the front with the assistance of the Active M Differential to improve traction and dynamics. This powertrain will see to it that both models reach 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
