Lexus SA unveils plans for the LC convertible

Lexus recently took on the challenge of creating what they considered to be the world’s most beautiful open-top car.

Lexus recently took on the challenge of creating what they considered to be the world’s most beautiful open-top car. Based on the LC coupe, Lexus had to preserve the award-winning styling motifs while incorporating a convertible roof.

The most challenging part of achieving this goal was achieving the same or similar roof-line found on the coupe derivative. Setting the cover as low as possible was key to avoid the flat design typically found behind the cockpit and to navigate this, Lexus ensured the beltline kicks up behind the doors, creating an overall tight and clean profile. Further bolstering the design and resulting in a character line running from the front to the back is an extra fold in the soft top which also allows the roof to fit in the space between the rear suspension towers.

With the convertible roof revealing the interior cabin, Lexus has incorporated innovative colour co-ordination to enhance the character of the vehicle. Owners will be able to specify the rood in either Black or Beige to match the additional colour options available for interior specification. Furthermore, the convertible retains the colour coordinated A-pillar trim which remains a design feature throughout the LC range. This results in the LC upholding the display of its luxurious interior when the roof is lowered, revealing the interior.

The interior also sees special care taken in its execution with quilting patterns featuring in the shoulder sections of the front seats and perforations with three different diameters appearing to progressively fade away.

Under the bonnet is the familiar naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 motor producing 351kW and 540Nm of torque. The powerplant comes mated to a 10-speed DirectShift automatic transmission and in this combination results in a linear but spirited acceleration. The onboard computers automatically adjust the power output from the engine based on the driving style. A more refined acceleration can be experienced during normal commute conditions whereas aggressive driving will result in sharper responses. The Lexus LC 500 Convertible is due to make its local appearance in 2021 with pricing being revealed closer to the time.
