Autodealer Dream Buy: Porsche Boxster

The Porsche Boxster will always be remembered fondly by enthusiasts; it made the Porsche brand more accessible by offering a mid-engine sports roadster, considerably cheaper than the 911 range. The Boxster name has been with us since 1996 and over the years has defied the critics, who initially thought it wasn’t a real Porsche. We are now at the point where it is considered one of the most satisfying convertibles to drive and is also very affordable.

What to watch out for:

-First-generation cars (1996-2004), especially the 2.5-litre base models are known to have cylinder liner issues;

-These models also have issues with the rear main oil seal, so check for any oil leaks as replacing this inexpensive part requires a huge amount of labour;

-Slightly later year model cars also had issues with the intermediate shaft as a single-row bearing was used. If this fails your engine is destroyed;

-Also, look out for cracked cylinder heads and dodgy water pumps;

-Second generation (2005-2011) cars have all the engine issues resolved with very few failures reported. Just check the vehicle’s suspension springs as these can break;

-Also, inspect the condition of the fabric top as this is expensive to replace or repair;

-Remember, the brake discs need replacing after three sets of pads; skimming is not possible.
