Piles – they’re embarrassing, but they shouldn’t be: here’s 8 ways to treat them

It is said even Napoleon suffered from haemorrhoids, the pain of which reportedly contributed to his crushing defeat at Waterloo.

Story regards of South Coast Herald.

Haemorrhoids (or piles) are among the most common of all health issues.

Some health professionals claim that 8 out of every 10 people will be afflicted with this condition at some stage of their lives.

Piles  are merely swollen veins in the anus, much like varicose veins in the legs.

Although they may be hereditary, they can also be caused by diet and toilet habits.

Here are some suggestions on how to tackle the problem, according to the Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies:

  • Avoid constipation by drinking lots of water and adding fibre to your diet.
  • If you struggle to poo, it may help to lubricate with a bit of petroleum jelly.
  • Use only white, non-scented toilet paper, and wipe VERY gently.
  • Don’t scratch, and don’t lift heavy objects.
  • Sitting in about 10cm of warm water with your knees raised (use the bath tub) can help sooth the pain.
  • Apply a haemorrhoid cream rather than using a suppository to relieve discomfort.
  • Being overweight can make the problem worse.
  • Sit on a doughnut cushion to take the pressure off.
