Be careful what you post on social media…it may cost you your job

Remember that years of hard work could easily be destroyed by a minute of recklessness, think twice before you post.

Social media has made the sharing of information very easy in this day and age, and this makes it easier for people to post their emotions without taking into consideration the repercussions of that post.

Former estate agent, Penny Sparrow is a perfect example.

She labelled black people as ‘monkeys’ in a Facebook rant and has had to face the wrath of the nation and court case after court case.

Here are some examples of public figures who have been taken to task for hate speech:

Tumi Morake, who’s also a presenter for SABC3’s WTF_Tumi has been bombarded with hate messages, but has been getting a lot of support on social media, with people saying that she was right to express her views.

But some social media users are not in favour of Morake’s views.

According to a report on the Huffington Post website, one of Jacaranda’s major advertisers has pulled out from the radio station, saying it does not want to be associated with a station that “gets involved with politics and mixes it with business”.

Morake is not the first and not the last to be in the firing line after making such comments.

Gareth Cliff was once ‘roasted’ on social media for ‘standing up for racism’.

The former editor-in-chief of Huffington Post, Verashni Pillay was also taken to court for hate speech.

It is advisable for people not to post their emotions on social media.

It’s good to first visualise the post on a billboard then ask yourself whether you would like your name to be attached to that post. If the answer is ‘no’, rather don’t post it.

Remember that years of hard work could easily be destroyed by a minute of recklessness.
