Gert Sibande Stars and Media Awards celebrate local talent

All winners of the awards were voted by the public through an SMS line.

The inaugural Gert Sibande Stars and Media Awards kicked off at the Ella De Bruin hall in the Civic Centre on Saturday.

The awards, founded and organised by the Khetlin Organisation, are a way for local artists to gain exposure and be applauded for their work.

Supported by the Gert Sibande District Municipality and various government entities, they saw a need to motivate and provide a platform for local artists and cultural groups to display their talent.

The community came in numbers, dressed in their Sunday best, to support the local stars.

The showcase provided performances by the nominated artists and local media personalities, which earned them thunderous applause from the boisterous crowd.

A familiar face to Highvelder, film maker Nkosingphile Maseko, won in his categories, adding two more trophies to his numerous awards.

“I told everybody that I got this. My work speaks for itself and my team and I will continue with our hard work. Thank you to everyone who voted,” he said.
