Abafana BakaMgqumeni plan thanksgiving concert with Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation

The award-winning Maskandi group from Volksrust recently returned to the country after representing South Africa musically at the 2018 Russia World Cup.

Abafana BakaMgqumeni, a Maskandi music act hailing from Volksrust, visited Ermelo on Monday, 30 July.

The award-winning duo that have roots in Nquthu, attended a plenary meeting at the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation (DCSR) with the aim of hosting a Thanksgiving concert in their hometown, Volksrust, in September.

The concert is the group’s way of giving thanks after they were recently chosen by DCSR to represent South Africa at a musical platform at the 2018 Russia Soccer World Cup.

The group, consisting of the Mseleku brothers, boasts South African music award and awards in their genre of Maskandi.

“They were chosen after numerous auditions by Maskandi artists around Gert Sibande District Municipality and they did us proud on the world stage,” Ms Thobile Mogale from DCSR said.

Ms Mogale further added that DCSR is doing all it can to develop local talent.

Local fans will get to see them live at the Volksrust town hall and the multi-purpose hall in Vukuzakhe in September.
