Caro legends inspire youth

The youth of Silobela in Carolina has been inspired by local soccer legends with their initiative for using sports to encourage healthy living.

The youth of Silobela in Carolina has been inspired by local soccer legends with their initiative for using sports to encourage healthy living.

Last weekend the Legends organised soccer matches with the theme “A healthy mind in a healthy body” to encourage both old and young to take some time in their busy schedules to exercise.

One of the organisers, Mr Sbura Mkhonza, said not only were these games about passing time, but also about bringing the youth and the seniors together, which could lead to the sharing of ideas and exchange of advice. It could also clear the streets of youngsters wasting their lives with drugs and substance abuse.

The games were played in two categories, the U/45 and above 45.

One of the legends that showcased his skills on the field was councillor Lucky “General” Shabangu, who is also part of the organising committee. He said the games were a build up to the major event to be held on 16 December when they will also host ladies’ soccer and netball.

Local businessman Mr Dumisa Msibi, also one of the legends, said they want to lead by example.

“The youth must learn from us. If we can still come out and play, so can they.”

Mr Tshepo Soko of the Carolina Sports Committee appreciated the efforts and said they would also like the municipality to involve itself in such initiatives, as they community-building.

“The truth is the municipality cannot solely take responsibility; the community also needs to play an active role in this and such initiatives are what we need,” said Mr Soko.

Carolina Legends would eventually like to be part of the Mpumalanga Legends group that hosts similar social events.
