Police successes are society’s successes

This week's column proved to be almost prophetic as a security guard is gunned own by criminals and his colleague critically wounded early on Friday morning. Let's hope and trust the public will help in bringing the perpetrators to book.

The successes achieved by police and security companies in our region over the past few weeks in bringing criminals to book is indeed pleasing.

The fight against crime is unfortunately never ending and as soon as the drug smugglers, diesel thieves, car thieves, robbers and rapists pounced on, still more follow in their wake.

Hearing of these successes fills one with a sense of relief that the battle against these unsavoury elements is not entirely lost.

Reporting on these successes via the newspaper and electronic media is indeed one of the uplifting positives of journalism.

One of the most pleasing aspects in writing these reports is not merely the fact that the criminals have been caught out, but being able to mention the role played by society in helping to catch them.

“Acting on information received from the public, police were able to …” is one of the most pleasing sentences a crime reporter can write because it tells us that society in general is fed-up with crime and the criminals that make our lives a misery.

We all have found ourselves talking about the crime rate in discussions with neighbours or friends but all too often this leads to nowhere.

Knowing of criminal activity in our neighbourhood and failing to report it is bound to fill one with deep regret if our sons and daughters and other loved ones also eventually get caught up in these activities.

It is our duty as society to provide the authorities with information of suspected criminal or suspicious activity within our neighbourhood and even in the workplace.

In this way we can help in the fight against crime and make society a place where we can move about freely again without fear.
