All systems go for 2016

It's time to rev those engines and build up speed to tackle the new year with all the ups and downs and challenges it may bring.

So, this week the year proper has begun in all earnest.

The calendar may well show that we are already well into the second week of the year, but, let’s face it, for most of us the first week of the year is much like the engine of an old jalopy that coughs and splutters when the key is turned. There is also only enough power to chug along at a leisurely pace.

But, folks, it’s time to rev those engines and build up speed to tackle the new year with all the ups and downs and challenges it may bring.

Apart from new challenges, many unresolved issues will be carried over from last year and my wish for those people who find themselves in this situation is that they may find the strength and wisdom to resolve these successfully.

Let us all sincerely hope and trust that in the year that lies ahead the powers-that-be will make a serious effort to beef up service delivery and put our town and country back on the road to prosperity and put the interests of the people first.

Remember, this is an election year and the only meaningful way to make one’s voice heard is by exercising the right to vote. A simple “X” can speak volumes.

The new year also tends to bring with it memories and reminiscences of good times we experienced with loved ones who have since passed on. Whether it it is the first new year we face without them or the tenth or even the twentieth or thirtieth year, the memories and longing still remain.

This is an unfortunate situation we all have to face at some time or another.

On the brighter side, for our learners the carry-over of writing exams in one year and only receiving the results in the next year has been nothing short of “Wow!”

It’s congratulations all round to the matriculants of our town for the excellent results achieved and just reward for the hard work put in by learners and teachers alike. We trust that these achievements will be carried forward into their future lives and they will become successful in whatever field they choose.

For those who didn’t make it, remember tenacity is the key word. Don’t give up. Keep trying and make a promise to yourself to gnaw at the bone until you achieve your goals.

In fact, let us all resolve to “go for it” in 2016.

Happy new year.
