Power on, power off

Power interruptions are inconvenient, but also costly.

Frustrated baker, Ermelo:
It is high time the municipality explained to consumers in parts of town, like Nederland Park, why there are so many power interruptions.

Rumours I have heard about the reasons for this inconvenience include that municipal employees switch off the power to indicate their dissatisfaction with not being paid for overtime; that birds sitting on the power lines and then flying away cause the interruptions; and that new electrical installations at the southern purification works are not switched on in proper sequence.

It is safe to assume that this is more speculation than fact.

But, in absence of a credible explanation from those that know the true situation, the rumours just become more and more absurd and the frustration levels of the affected consumers climb into the red.

Power interruptions are inconvenient, but also costly. For me it’s difficult to remain calm when a second or third batch of baking has been ruined due to the power going off when the pans were still in the oven.

How business people dependent on power must feel, I can only imagine.

The disregard the municipality shows its clients by offering no explanation or apology is appalling.

The fact that the situation is obviously not a temporary problem, is even more worrying with summer thunderstorms in the offing.
