Ligbron principal addresses vandalism claims

He called on the learners to channel their energy into their studies rather than disruptive activities.

In response to reports of vandalism at Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie last night, Principal Gerhard Brand has addressed the situation, providing clarity and urging learners to take responsibility for their actions.

Initial reports sent by residents to the Highvelder suggested significant damage to the astro hockey fields, which if true, could have led to substantial repair costs.

Fortunately, Brand confirmed these rumours were unfounded, and the fields remain intact.

He, however, said graffiti was discovered on an asbestos panel at one of the centres. This graffiti, although not extensive, required repainting.

In addition to the graffiti, three dustbins were emptied onto the hockey field.

While the disruption was quickly managed, with the daily cleaning routine mitigating the impact, Brand underscored that such behaviour is unacceptable, no matter how minor it may seem.

“There were also eggs thrown at the paving near the netball courts. These acts, while not causing serious damage, reflect a disregard for the school environment and the community’s shared values,” he noted

The school is now reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the vandalism.

Brand made it clear that there would be consequences for those involved, notably for the graffiti.

“If we are able to locate the individuals responsible, they, along with their parents, will be held accountable for the costs of the damage,” he stated.

Addressing the broader implications of such behaviour, Brand expressed his disappointment.

“These are not just pranks; they are actions that can have serious consequences,” he said. “It’s crucial for learners to understand that such behaviour could lead to far-reaching repercussions, including a criminal record or even being barred from writing their exams.”

Brand acknowledged the pressures and excitement that come with the end of the school year but stressed that this is no excuse for destructive or disruptive behaviour.

“Learners must recognise that they are at a critical juncture. They are transitioning into adulthood, and with that comes the responsibility to act with maturity and foresight,” he said.

He called on the learners to channel their energy into their studies rather than disruptive activities.

“The focus now should be on preparing for the upcoming exams. The effort that went into these acts of vandalism should be redirected toward ensuring academic success so they don’t face disappointment later on.”

Brand concluded, “Ligbron Akademie vir Tegnologie remains committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment where learners can thrive, both academically and personally.”
