Ermelo man salutes all women on Women’s day

Let all of us give respect where it is due and remember our mothers and the mothers of the future.

Danie du Plessis from Ermelo writes:

I want to salute and give my congratulations to the women of Ermelo for their contribution to the community of Ermelo.

9 August 2024 is National Women’s Day to commemorate the contribution of women to society. They are mothers, spouses, workers, in business and farmers producing food  for the nation. Women are an integral part of the economy and their contribution to the gross national product.

Women are renowned also as musicians, politicians and sport stars. In addition they serve in the security forces and medical services.

It is also a reality that not all women enjoy the benefits of a free society where they are respected  and treated as equal in terms of the law. In certain parts of Africa women are just seen as a commodity not a human being. Afghanistan is an example where women are very badly treated by the Taliban. This is an injustice and we as a society in Ermelo have the right to think about this and give silent support.

Violence against women in our society is a human rights abuse. Whether it takes place  in our community or on an international level. Violence and abuse of women s rights in Afghanistan caused the UN  to warn the international community that” unprecedented, systemic attacks on women s and girls rights and the flouting of international obligations are creating a gender based apartheid”  This is what the UN experts call institutionalized oppression of Afghan women.

There are many other examples in the world as well. In England  an estimated 2 million women to be victim of offences including stalking, harassment, sexual assault and domestic abuse.

Let us in Ermelo avoid this.

Let all of us give respect where it is due and remember our mothers and the mothers of the future.
