The ANC’s regional leadership has announced plans for a protest against Israel’s participation in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Protest info

The protest, organised by the ANC, is said to take place on August 7, beginning at 10:00 from Cassim Park Hall and proceeding to the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

In an official letter, Maqhawe Mlotshwa, the acting regional secretary, invited the Highvelder Newspaper to cover the demonstration.

Background

This protest is part of a larger international response to Israel’s involvement in the Olympics, set against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and tensions in the Middle East.

The participation of Israeli athletes in the Games has been met with significant controversy and backlash, including protests and heightened security concerns.

Israeli athletes in Paris have been subjected to various threats and incidents, prompting French authorities to ensure round-the-clock protection for the delegation.

The international community remains divided over the inclusion of Israel in the Games, with some viewing it as a platform for political expression and others calling for sports to remain apolitical.

The International Judo Federation (IJF) has initiated a review following an incident where an Algerian judoka did not weigh in for a match against an Israeli competitor, raising questions about the intersection of sportsmanship and political protest.

The Highvelder Newspaper will be on the ground to cover the protest.
