Two suspects arrested in Sheepmoor in connection with unlicensed firearms

The firearms will undergo ballistic tests to determine whether they were used in the commission of crime since being stolen on Christmas Day.

SHEEPMOOR – Two suspects appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on January 8, facing charges of burglary, theft and being in possession of suspected stolen property and unlicensed firearms with ammunition.

According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, a provincial police spokesperson, the burglary was reported to have taken place on a farm near Sheepmoor.

“According to the report, a group of robbers stormed onto the farm on December 25 while the owners were on holiday,” Mohlala said. “It is further stated that the robbers had stolen several items, including five firearms and ammunition.”

Mohlala said the police followed up some information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects on January 4. One of them was arrested.

The investigation led to the arrest of the second suspect the next day.

“Two rifles, a shotgun and two pistols were confiscated, and about 96 rounds of ammunition were recovered for various calibres of firearms, including a shotgun, a rifle, a Glock pistol and a 9mm pistol.”

The firearms will undergo ballistic tests to determine whether they were used in the commission of crime since being stolen on Christmas Day.

“The police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the two suspects as the investigation continues.”

The outcome of the suspects’ first court appearance was not yet known by the time of going to press.
